What actually counts as blackout
The term is abused. Three grades are sold in Doha as “blackout”:
- Dim-out — a heavy weave, 70–85% block. You will still see window shape at noon.
- Coated blackout (1–2 pass) — acrylic foam backing, 90–95%. Can crack after a few years in Gulf heat.
- 3-pass blackout — black core layer between two white/colour layers, 99–100%. This is what we use as standard.
Even with true blackout fabric, light leaks around the edges. Full darkness needs the curtain returned to the wall, overlapped in the centre and hung above the reveal — a fitting problem, not a fabric problem.
Heat and AC cost in Qatar
Doha summer glass surface temperatures regularly exceed 55°C. Thermal blackout with a reflective backing lowers radiant heat gain through the window, which is why villas with large west-facing glazing see the clearest difference on the electricity bill. Pair with a sheer layer so the room is not dark all day.

Why does light still leak at the sides?
