Wall-mounted looks cleaner and lets the headboard run wider than the bed, but it needs solid fixings. Bed-attached is better in rented apartments where you cannot drill freely.
Which fabric for a headboard?
Anything you would not choose for a sofa — a headboard takes almost no abrasion. Velvet and boucle both work beautifully here and are far more durable in this position.
